Scholarships That Open Doors
The Maryville City Schools Foundation offers several scholarships that honor achievement and support students as they move beyond high school. Each award reflects the generosity of donors who believe in empowering the next generation of leaders and learners.
The Lamar Alexander Scholarship was established in 1995 through a partnership with the Lamar Alexander Family and Maryville City Schools Foundation. The $1 million grant came from the Lockheed Martin Corporation Charitable Award Fund at the Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program. According to the company, Lockheed Martin Corporation created the Charitable Award Fund in order to allow members of its board of directors to fulfill their commitments to support communities.
Senator Alexander recommended the Maryville City Schools Foundation for the one-time grant in 1995 when he was a private citizen and a member of the Lockheed Martin board of directors. $43,000 is awarded annually to five Maryville Scholars that are selected by MHS staff. Each year there are three grantees that receive $1,000 one-time grants. There is one $15,000 grant that is divided over four years and one $25,000 grant that is divided over four years. The fund is held at East Tennessee Foundation where it is fully endowed and will grant scholarships into perpetuity.
Mayor Stanley B. “Skeeter” Shields served the City of Maryville from 1967 through 1999. Upon stepping down as Mayor in 1999, the community honored him through donations to provide a scholarship fund for Maryville High School seniors. Since his passing in 2002, the scholarship has continued as a way to remember his spirit of giving and service to our community.
The Shields Scholarship provides a one-time scholarship to a Maryville High School senior enrolling in a four (4) year college or university who plans to enhance the lives of other people through their profession and/or community service. The scholarship rewards a student who demonstrates good citizenship, their commitment to community, and volunteerism. There is one annual scholarship for $1,300 for the fall semester of the first academic year.
The scholarship in memory of Boone Dixon is a collaboration of his family, former student-athletes, and Maryville Junior High colleagues. The Boone Dixon Memorial Scholarship will provide scholarships to well-rounded, determined, and compassionate students graduating from Maryville High who exemplifies many of the qualities that made Boone Dixon so special. He had an insatiable curiosity for the world around him, a passion for being active in nature, and sincere care for people near and far. The Boone Dixon Memorial Scholarship program will award two one-time scholarships of $2,500 to one male and one female Maryville High School graduating senior in spring 2022. The scholarship can go towards a college, university, or vocational school.
The William Bennett Scott Scholarship provides scholarships to African-American students at Maryville High School enrolling in four (4) year colleges or universities. The 2022 Scholarship amount is $7,500 payable to the college/university in one installment at the beginning of the fall semester for the 2022-2023 academic year. The Scholarship is a year-to-year renewable award ranging from $5,000 - $10,000. At a minimum, recipients must maintain a C average and be in good standing at their college or university to apply for renewal. Students are also required to do at least 8 hours of community service each semester and keep a monthly journal of service activities. All scholarships are paid directly to the college/university of choice. Proof of enrollment must be supplied to MCSF by the college/university prior to sending the check.
The Maryville City Schools Foundation has established a scholarship in honor of Dr. Penny Ferguson, who dedicated over 50 years of service to the students at Maryville High School. The Dr. Penny Ferguson Scholarship aims to recognize her contribution to the teaching profession. It will grant a one-time award of $2500 to a senior student who demonstrates a desire to pursue a degree in education.
