Great education must start somewhere. Since the first graduating class in 1918, the Maryville City School System has become well-respected for serving as the source of excellence in education for many thousands of students.
The first graduating class included 11 girls and two boys, and since that time, the Maryville City School System has experienced an explosion in growth as many families see the educational opportunities that only Maryville City Schools can provide for their children.
Today, with school enrollment numbers increasing, the school system is facing new challenges in maintaining and continuing to provide top-tier educational equipment and programs for its students.
In the most competitive school systems nationwide, modern classrooms no longer simply use chalkboards, books and other basic elements of what most adults remember from their own school days. Instead, today’s classroom integrates a range of technology and new teaching innovations, often operating as an interactive multimedia lab that allows teachers to apply instructional methods through the use of new technology.
Tools such as smart boards and LCD projectors are providing teachers with the opportunity to teach students in new, more experiential ways, in keeping with the high-sensory media environment in which children are growing up now, surrounded by the latest and most compelling in technological innovation.
The Need
To remain competitive with other school systems – not just in Tennessee or in the Southeast but also nationwide and internationally – and to maintain the level of educational excellence for which Maryville Schools are known, the Maryville City Schools Foundation (MCSF) has partnered with Maryville City Schools, the Maryville City School Board, and the Maryville City Council to raise nearly $500,000 in funds to provide classrooms with new educational technology such as LCD projectors, interactive whiteboards, speakers, wireless keyboards and accessories, amplification systems, activote sets, activslates and document cameras.
Students learn in different ways and, by virtue of that reality, require diverse means to gain the most from school. For example, some students are visual learners who learn the most by watching and observing while others are auditory learners who learn by hearing. And an even different type of learner are those who learn kinesthetically -- discovering information through hands-on instruction and activities.
It is difficult for teachers to be able to meet the learning styles of each student in a traditional classroom setting that tends to favor a “one size fits all” mode of information exchange. New technology is transforming the ways teachers are able to deliver instruction and provide students with a chance to learn and thrive in an educational environment that fits their learning style. The use of technology in the classroom engages student participation and helps teachers keep students on a path of mastering learning objectives that are mandated by the state.
Not all school systems are fortunate enough to have partners in education like the Maryville School System. In fact, many school systems have insufficient technology and resources to use for student instruction. Currently, the Maryville City Schools technology budget provides basic needs, upgrades and replacements, but the proposed technology advances will take Maryville City Schools above and beyond technology capabilities of other school systems. Providing new technology will benefit Maryville students as they will gain a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
The Maryville City School System is prepared to put new educational technology innovations to use. As equipment is received, teachers who have not already been trained will learn how to incorporate technology into their lesson plans. In doing so, teachers will be able to utilize their time more effectively while students will experience learning in a way that suits their individual learning approach.
How to Help
To continue to distinguish Maryville from other schools systems, MCSF seeks community support – from individuals as well as businesses – to make donations to fund technology needs. Making an investment in education is important to the future success of Maryville City School students.
Maryville schools are not just good schools. They are schools of excellence. Please help MCSF not just maintain but exceed the tradition of excellence delivered to this community by donating the funds necessary to purchase the technology equipment.
